Seizing the changing flow of inbound tourism and stimulating market revitalization

The year 2016 continues to see a steady increase of inbound tourists and it is believed certain that the annual number of foreign visitors will exceed 20million.

Along with this, the amount of consumption by inbound tourists for the first half of 2016 grew by 18.1% year on year. While the inbound market grows steadily, new trends are emerging as well. According to statistics announced by Japan Tourism Agency for the April to June term, while the consumption in the categories of accommodation, meals, travel, and entertainment increased compared with last year, it declined in the shopping category.
There had been talk for a while that shopping sprees, or the so-called bakugai is losing momentum, and it showed in actual numbers. From now it is more important to consider ‘what kind of experience we can offer to foreign tourists’ than to just offer goods.

When chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga spoke at our first “INBOUND JAPAN 2016”, he said that one of the government measures would be to change the national parks and utilize them as places where tourists can have special experiences. The movement of experience-oriented value creation will promote economic effects not just in urban areas, but in the countryside as well.
Another important factor in inbound tourism is to boost consumption of Japanese products after tourists go back to their country through e-commerce, or EC, in addition to consumption while they are in Japan.

In order to enhance the value of the ‘Japan Experience’ as well as to support dynamizing the Japanese economy, Nikkei BP, continuing from last year, is going to organize “INBOUND JAPAN 2017” for three days from July 19 through 21, 2017. Please consider taking part in this event as an exhibitors.
