“Shitsukan” - Percetion of material and surface qualities

“Shitsukan” refers to perception of materials and surface qualities of natural and man-made objects, and plays an important role to identify objects and to judge their surface conditions. This talk reviews recent topics of Shitsukan research including perception of glossiness, translucency, material judgments, and discuss its relation to display technology.

Shigeki NAKAUCHI received his Ph.D degree in systems and information systems from Toyohashi University of Technology,Toyohashi Japan in 1993. He is currently Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Toyohashi University of Technology, Toyohashi Japan. His research interests include visual perception & cognition and imaging technology.He is a member of the research project (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas, MEXT): “Integrative studies of neural mechanisms and advanced information technologies for perception of material and surface qualities”.

Many different kind of video processing technologies have been developed depend on the video bandwidth increase. In the narrow band imaging era, the target of processing was focused on the compensation for poor bandwidth. But now the bandwidth becomes rich and then the new target for video processing must be defined.

4K Satellite Transmission/Production Trials Reveal Maturing Technologies

4K live relay and satellite transmission was trialed for two Japan League soccer games, in October 2012 and March 2013. The report on the two tests will examine what is possible today with a mixture of with existing equipment and HD production, including 4K production and satellite relay requirements.
