A game software for smartphones/tablets that is creating a furor is the “Puzzle & Dragons”. On seeing this popularity, many game development companies are putting their effort into developing game application for smartphones. On the other hand, there is still room for development of games for smartphones using the browser. Application and browser each have its strong points and weak points, and it is necessary to develop games and structure a business model considering these characteristics. Will the post Puzzle & Dragons game software be an application game, or will it be a browser game? Or, is there a third choice? Various game platforms, such as new-type household use game machines, smartphones/tablets, PC online, cloud game and Android installed game machines, are spreading its winds on a broader scale than ever before. Furthermore, other than the conventional way to sell game packages, the way to deliver the game package has become diverse, such as online type, download type and social type. As a result of this phenomenon, “the type of game business” and “the user image” has become so complex that it is becoming more difficult to decide the direction of game development. Independent game market is attracting attention all over the world. The reason for this is quite clear. With the game platforms and delivery methods becoming more diverse, the way to deliver games to the people has also become diverse, making it possible to offer games which have been developed by an individual or by a small group to a wide range of people around the world. As a result, innovative game titles offering new experience to the users started to emerge from indies which is the reason why game companies around the world are giving much attention to indies as a field to discover new talents. So, in this session, companies that support experts and their activities will get together to talk about the present independent game situation in Japan and discuss the problems and possibilities within it.

Input/Output Device that Change the Future of Games ― Exploring the possibilities of applying HMD and new sensors to games ―

Because the performance of hardware, including game machines, smartphones, tablets and personal computers, has greatly improved, it has become difficult to mark the difference in the game contents with just the main unit. Now, the things that seem to hold the key are image output equipment like Head Mount Displays (HMD) and input sensor equipment like Kinect. That is why HMD for games, Oculus Rift, and the sensor that is designed to track hands and finger motion to a spatial precision of 10μm, Leap Motion, are attracting attention recently. In this session, engineers and researchers with much knowledge on input/output device will explain about the latest technologies, including HMD that is making significant progress and new sensor equipment, and their application to games.
